Native to the Americas, the grapefruit is a pleasantly tart and sweet citrus that is a cross between an orange and a pomelo. With over 20 varieties grown in the U.S. alone, grapefruit is a medium-large round fruit with a yellow or pinkish-yellow rind and is categorized as “white,” “pink,” or “ruby” depending on the flesh color.
There are two main western varieties (Ruby Red and Marsh White) and two recently developed varieties (Star Ruby and Rio). All are sweet, juicy, and seedless. You'll find other interesting varieties at the farmers' market, too.
